The Kolkata Knight Riders are reportedly contemplating the release of Venkatesh Iyer ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League season. This decision follows a disappointing performance from the all-rounder during the 2025 season, where he failed to meet expectations despite being a high-profile acquisition.

Acquired for a staggering Rs 23.75 crore, Iyer managed to score only 142 runs across seven matches. His strike rate of 139.22 and an average of 20.29 fell significantly short of what is anticipated from a top-order batsman, especially given his hefty price tag and the promise he showed before the tournament.

Iyer was appointed vice-captain by Ajinkya Rahane, a move that reflected the management's faith in his leadership abilities. However, his inability to perform consistently led to his replacement in a crucial match against the Chennai Super Kings, highlighting the diminishing confidence the team had in him.
